Hong Kong people’s first trip to Hokkaido for skiing: full itinerary, accommodation, and cost breakd

The first time going skiing in Hokkaido, my friend asked me a question: "Is it very expensive?"

I replied: "It depends on how you go."

How to choose the length of the trip?

3 nights 4 days (shortest)

  • Suitable for: Trying out the experience, limited time, strict budget control

  • Disadvantages: The first 1–2 days are spent adapting, and you have to leave just when you’re getting the hang of it

  • Suggestion: Build a foundation in advance at Ice World in Tsuen Wan, so you won’t waste time once you arrive in Hokkaido

5 nights 6 days (most recommended)

  • Suitable for: Most Hong Kong people

  • Days 1–2: Adapting to real snow

  • Days 3–5: Rapid skill improvement period, the most fun time

  • Day 6: Last ski day, reluctant to leave

7 days or more (advanced level)

  • Suitable for: Seriously wanting to improve skills, or planning to visit multiple ski resorts

  • Can arrange combinations like Niseko + TEINE or Niseko + Furano

How to choose accommodation?

Stay inside or near the ski resort (most recommended)

Ski-in/ski-out is the biggest advantage of Hokkaido accommodation — you can open the door in the morning and head straight to the slopes without carrying gear or taking transport. Very convenient.

  • Niseko: Many options at the base of Grand Hirafu, ranging from budget guesthouses to five-star hotels

  • Rusutsu: Direct resort access to the ski area, good value for money

  • TEINE: Can stay in Sapporo city, 30-minute drive, more choices and cheaper in the city

Budget reference (per night)

  • Guesthouse/youth hostel: ¥8,000–15,000 per person

  • Mid-range hotel: ¥15,000–30,000 per person

  • Luxury ski resort hotel: ¥30,000+ per person

How to get there by transport?

New Chitose Airport → Ski resort

  • To Teine: Taxi approx. ¥5,000–6,000 or shuttle bus approx. ¥1,000–1,500

  • To Furano: Direct bus approx. 2 hours, around ¥3,000

  • To Rusutsu: Bus approx. 1.5 hours, ¥2,500–3,500

It is recommended to book shuttle buses online in advance, as they are often fully booked during peak season.

Should you bring or rent equipment?

For the first trip, renting is recommended.

Hokkaido ski resorts have complete rental equipment available, including snowboards, boots, snowsuits, and goggles. Unless you already have your own gear, there’s no need to buy and bring a full set.

SnowLife also offers equipment rental advice and can help you find the most cost-effective options.

Step-on snowboard rental, snowsuit rental, and lift ticket discounts are available. Regular prices and lesson package deals can be inquired via private message.
